Welcome to Year 3!
Here, you will discover all the learning that is taking place in Term 3.
We have been reading, ‘Oliver and the Seawigs’ this term. A daily audio recording is provided to the children and they then complete a task based on what has been read. Our focus this term is retrieval type questions based on the text. Children are provided with sentence stems which they use to structure their answers.
This term in English, children have been using the text, ‘Escape from Pompeii’ to write a recount. At the beginning of the unit, children were shown different recounts to express their opinions: what they enjoyed about the recounts, what they liked or disliked about the characters and what information was contained within the recount. They looked at different features of recounts before identifying features of the genre. Finally, children begin to write their own recounts from the perspective of Tranio, the main character in the book.
At the beginning of this term, children were securing their understanding of 3, 4 and 8 times tables. They then moved on to applying this understanding to multiplying and dividing a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number. They learnt different methods to support their understanding of these 2 number operations and applied this knowledge to compare different statements with the greater than, less than and equal symbols.
ScienceOur topic in Science this term is, ‘Rocks and Soils’. Children have learnt how igneous sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks are formed and their properties.
In Geography, children have been learning about the different layers of our planet and their different properties before moving onto lessons which detail how volcanoes and earthquakes occur. We have been learning how volcanoes and earthquakes are formed at tectonic plate boundaries and their impact on our environment.
