London History Day
Celebrate London History Day returns this year on Monday 31st May. The date was chosen at the inception of CLH Day in 2017, as it was the first time Big Ben started to keep time in 1859. An iconic landmark in London, Big Ben was designed by Edmund Beckett Denison and took 13 years to build.
Lathom Junior School will be participating in this special event, with other London schools, on Friday 28th May. As part of the celebrations, children are asked to come to school dressed as their favourite historic Londoner. This year will be a welcome change from 2020, as most of the children were working remotely and could only upload images of their wonderful costumes. Now we can show off our costumes in school! Getting into costume is a fun way for the children to connect with and gain a greater understanding of our great city and its people. The theme for this year is ‘Community, unity and celebration’ in support of the Mayor’s ‘London’s open’ campaign and as we celebrate London’s wealth of historical diversity, this year, they can include a local, community hero.
Check out the London Mayor’s website for Celebrate London History Day information. There are lots of ideas for historical figures that the children can research, such as Charlie Chaplin, Jack Cornwell, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II, David Beckham and many, many more. The website also has ideas on the costumes that can created for each historical figure.
Enjoy the day, especially the opportunity to research the people that make our fair city great.
