Healthy School Streets
Our school has been selected in the borough to implement a Healthy School Streets scheme. This is a fantastic opportunity for the school with clear benefits for pupils, staff and local residents.
The scheme came into effect on Monday 2nd December 2019.
How does it work?
A section of Lathom Road (between High Street North and Keppel Road) and a section of Keppel Road (between Lathom Road and Clements Road) will become a pedestrian and cycle only zone at school drop-off and pick-up times.
This is between 8 -9 am and 3 – 4 pm,
Monday to Friday during term time only.
This means that there will be less cars driving near the school as only residents who live on these streets, Blue Badge holders and emergency services will be able to drive here during these times.
From Monday 3rd February 2020, to continue with keeping our school streets both safer and cleaner, vehicles not on the approved list will be issued a penalty charge notice if found entering the restricted zone – during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times.
What are the benefits?
- Studies reveal that children are exposed to high levels of air pollution during their trips to and from school and during the school day. Eliminating motor traffic at the start and end of the school day will significantly decrease air pollution around the school.
- Children who travel to school on foot, by scooter, or by bike are getting regular exercise and can breathe cleaner air. They then arrive at school ready to learn.
At Lathom Junior School, we encourage children to enjoy a healthy and active journey to school!
