NSPCC Number Day 2020
On Friday 7th February 2020, Lathom Junior School celebrated NSPCC Number Day, which is a maths-inspired fundraising day for all children. Children were encouraged to dress up as a number(s) and brought a donation for NSPCC.
Maths learning was based on the text ‘How many Jelly Beans? : A Giant Book of Giant Numbers’. With bright illustrations and irresistible extra-large format, this book made learning in Years 3 to 6 AMAZING!
Years 3 and 4 explored the world of statistics. Year 3 students made tally charts and bar graphs and were able to interpret data about jelly beans. Similarly, Year 4 students constructed tally charts and bar graphs but also used frequency tables for data presentation. Children in Year 5 enjoyed using jelly beans as a great pictorial representation for understanding fractions. In Year 6, children were introduced to the concept of probability as they made decisions about what colour jellybeans they would be most likely to pick if they picked 1 of 3 jellybeans out of a cup. All children were encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking.
Thank you parents for supporting this activity.
