Black History Month Exhibition 2019
Thursday 28th November 2019, Lathom Junior School was honoured to have a special guest at our Black History Month Exhibition. Mayor of Newham, Rokshana Fiaz attended along with Councillor Marriott. They were astonished at the work presented and the way in which the children spoke so knowledgeable about their research.
The children explored a range of figures and events including Baroness Floella Benjamin, Maya Angelou, Olympians and The Windrush. The children engaged in a range of activities including biographies, fact files, speeches and reports. There was also a range of artwork, portraits of Baroness Benjamin, silhouettes of Olympians and the children’s representation of graffiti art by Jean-Michel Basquiat. The exhibition was attended by parents, carers and governors, who all mentioned how confident the children were when discussing their chosen topic.
Comments made in our Visitor’s Book included…’Very clear presentation and confident children,’ ‘I was really pleased to see all the beautiful artwork…’ ‘This school always makes me proud!’
Mayor Fiaz wrote, ‘What an amazing exhibition reflecting a great celebration of Black History Month! Well done Lathom School on your educative displays, full of colour, information and insight’ Praise indeed. It was a special afternoon, and everyone who came not only enjoyed the exhibition, but the excellent Caribbean food, cooked by our own Maria Houlker. Thank you to everyone for their endeavours and we look forward to next year!
