THE CURRICULUM

The curriculum which we offer all of our children is provided through a series of planned units of work which are created and implemented by our teaching staff. It is in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum and local initiatives and we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum which reflects our children, the resources that we have available to us at Lathom and is culturally inclusive.

This has year at Lathom we have implemented our new creative curriculum, where foundation subjects have been taught in a cross-curricular manner.  Have a look at the topic overviews to see what we are learning about.

As part of the Creative Curriculum we have been learning about Sustainability.

Sustainability essentially means thinking about how we can best use our resources to avoid waste and to look after our planet wisely so future children can live on our planet comfortably.

At Lathom Junior School we are really taking sustainability seriously. The government would like all schools to be sustainable schools by 2020! It is really important we all do things, as parents, as teachers and pupils to save energy and not produce too much waste.

Here are some of the things we are doing to help:

·     Completing an Eco-Audit of the school. We will be given advice on how to improve the systems in the school so we are more environmentally friendly.

·     Developing a focus on key areas: healthy eating, travel to school, what we buy and use as a school.

·     Including sustainability in the curriculum. In Term 4, Year 5’s topic is ‘The Life of Paper’. We are investigating where paper comes from, asking what the world would be like without paper, evaluating our use of paper in the school and recycling by making our own paper!

A display to show some of the learning that has taken place across the school in the new creative curriculum.
